When a windshield has to be replaced instead of repaired
Anything longer than about six inches, any crack that reaches the edge of the glass, and any chip sitting in the driver’s line of sight is a replacement. Edge cracks matter most — that is where the glass carries load, and a crack there spreads across the whole windshield the first time you hit a pothole or a cold morning.
If it is a small chip and it has not reached the edge, say so when you call. Repairing it is cheaper and faster, and we would rather do that.
What the job actually involves
The old glass and the old urethane come out, the pinch weld is cleaned back and primed, and new urethane goes down in one continuous bead. Skipping the primer or bridging a gap in that bead is what produces the wind whistle and the water leak that shows up three weeks later.
Then it has to cure. We tell you the safe drive-away time for the day’s temperature and humidity before we leave — usually about an hour, and it is not a formality.
