Windshield Chip Repair
A rock chip is the cheapest windshield problem you will ever have, and it stays cheap for about a week. Heat, cold and a rough road turn it into a crack that runs, and once it runs the whole windshield has to come out.
- How long does a windshield chip repair take?
- About 30 minutes. Safety Prime Auto Glass & Tint vacuums the air out of the break, injects clear resin under pressure, cures it with UV light and polishes it flush. You can drive immediately afterwards.
- Is a chip repair or a full replacement better?
- Repair the chip if you can — it is far cheaper, faster, and keeps the factory seal, which is always the best seal a windshield will ever have. Repair works on chips smaller than a quarter and short cracks that have not reached the edge of the glass or the driver’s line of sight. Anything beyond that needs replacement.
- Will the chip still be visible after the repair?
- Usually a faint mark remains where the damage was. The purpose of the repair is structural — it restores the strength of the glass and stops the chip spreading into a crack. Clean, fresh chips repair almost invisibly; ones left open to dirt and rain for weeks do not.
What can be repaired
Chips smaller than a quarter, and short cracks up to roughly six inches, that are not in the driver’s direct line of sight and have not reached the edge of the glass. Bullseyes, star breaks and combination breaks all repair well.
A repair restores most of the strength and stops the spread. It will not make the mark disappear completely — expect a faint blemish where the damage was.
What cannot
Anything touching the edge, anything sitting in front of the driver’s eyes, and anything contaminated by weeks of dirt and water. Those get replaced, and we will tell you straight rather than sell you a repair that fails.
Keep it clean until we get there
Put a piece of clear tape over the chip. It keeps dirt and water out of the break, and a clean break gives a far more invisible repair. Do not aim the defroster at full heat straight at it — that temperature difference is exactly what makes chips run.
