Window Tint Removal
Old film does not come off in one satisfying sheet. Dyed film that has failed comes off in shreds, leaving a layer of dead adhesive behind, and the rear window has a defroster grid printed on the glass that a scraper destroys in seconds.
- Can you remove old window tint without damaging the defroster?
- Yes. Safety Prime Auto Glass & Tint uses steam and controlled heat to soften the adhesive so the film lifts along the defroster lines rather than across them, then clears the residue chemically rather than with a blade. A scraped-off defroster grid cannot be repaired — it means a new rear window — which is why removal is done as real work rather than rushed.
- Why did my window tint turn purple and bubble?
- Because it is dyed film. The dye breaks down under ultraviolet light, shifting toward purple, and the adhesive fails and blisters. Carbon and nano-ceramic films use particles instead of dye and hold their colour for the life of the film.
- Should I remove old tint before having new film installed?
- Yes, always — new film will not bond over old adhesive, and any bubble or blemish underneath shows through. Safety Prime Auto Glass & Tint does removal and re-tinting in the same visit, so the glass is stripped, cleaned and re-filmed once rather than twice.

Why old tint fails in the first place
Almost every bubbling, purple, cloudy window in Sacramento is dyed film. The dye breaks down under UV, the colour shifts toward purple, the adhesive gives up, and the film delaminates into blisters. Carbon and ceramic films do not do this, which is why we do not install dyed film at all.
Once it has failed there is no repair. It has to come off completely, adhesive included, before new film can go on.
The rear window is the whole problem
Side windows are flat-ish, have no electronics on them, and forgive a bit of impatience. The rear window has the defroster grid — and often the radio antenna — printed directly onto the inside surface in a thin conductive line.
A razor blade takes those lines off. So does an aggressive pad, and so does peeling film upward across the grid instead of along it. We use steam and heat to soften the adhesive and lift the film along the lines, then clear the residue chemically rather than mechanically.
A dead defroster grid is not repairable in any meaningful way. It is a new rear window. That is why tint removal is quoted as real work rather than as a five-minute favour.
Removal plus re-tint, in one visit
If you are replacing the film, book both together. The glass is already stripped and cleaned to the standard new film needs, so there is no second prep and no second appointment.
Mobile, wherever the car is. There is no shop to drive to. We come to wherever your car already is — your driveway, your workplace car park, an apartment lot, or the side of the road it stopped on — anywhere in greater Sacramento, with no call-out fee and no mileage charge.
