What pitting is
Every mile of freeway sandblasts the glass with grit too small to chip it. Over 80,000 or 100,000 miles those impacts accumulate into a field of microscopic craters across the swept area.
In flat daylight you cannot see it. Driving west on Highway 50 at six in the evening, every one of those pits scatters the low sun into a wall of white glare.
How to check yours
Two tests. In daylight, run a fingernail lightly across the driver's side of the glass — pitting has a faint sandpaper texture rather than feeling like glass. At night, park facing a wall and put your high beams on; heavy pitting shows as a haze bloom.
The other test is honest self-assessment: if you have started avoiding driving west at sunset, that is the answer.
It cannot be polished out
Glass polishing removes material to level the surface. Take enough off a windshield to level thousands of pits and you introduce optical distortion — which on a modern car also puts a camera behind that distortion.
Pitting is a replacement, and it is the one case where perfectly intact glass is genuinely worn out. Sacramento's long flat sun angles and high freeway mileage make it more common here than in most places.
