New window tint: the first seven days

Window film is applied with a water-and-soap solution, and a thin layer of that solution stays trapped between the film and the glass when you drive away. Everything about the first week comes down to letting it evaporate undisturbed.

Window Tint

Leave the windows up for three days

This is the one rule that actually matters. The adhesive has not fully bonded, and the top edge of the film is the most vulnerable part — rolling a window down drags that edge against the door seal and peels it.

Three days is the safe figure in warm weather. In a cold or damp spell, give it five.

What is normal, and for how long

What you seeNormal?How long
Slight milky hazeYes3–7 days
Small water pockets or bubblesYesUp to 2–3 weeks in cool weather
Faint streaks in certain lightYesClears with the haze
A tiny gap at the edge of the glassYesPermanent — the film is cut just short of the edge on purpose
Large trapped bubbles with sharp edgesNoCall us
Dust or a hair under the filmNoCall us
Film lifting at a cornerNoCall us

The distinction is shape. Evaporating moisture makes soft, round, shifting pockets that shrink over days. A contamination bubble has a hard little centre and never changes. If it has not moved in three weeks, it is not water.

How to clean it, from now on

  • No ammonia. Ever. Ammonia breaks down film adhesive and most household blue glass cleaners are ammonia-based. This is the number one killer of good tint.
  • Use a dedicated ammonia-free glass cleaner, or plain water with a drop of dish soap.
  • Microfibre only. Paper towels are abrasive enough to leave fine scratches over time.
  • Wipe the top edge horizontally, not up and down, so you never lift the edge.
  • Wait a week before the first clean.

A note about defroster lines

Rear window film sits over the defroster grid. Scraping ice off the inside of the rear window, or attacking it with an abrasive pad, damages both the film and the grid underneath. Let the defroster do its job and keep anything harder than a microfibre cloth away from it.

Questions on this topic

How long after tinting can I roll my windows down?

Three days in warm weather, five in cold or damp conditions. The adhesive is still bonding and the top edge of the film is the most vulnerable part — rolling the window down drags that edge against the door seal and can peel it.

Why does my new window tint look hazy or bubbly?

That is the water-and-soap mounting solution evaporating from between the film and the glass. Haze usually clears in three to seven days and small soft water pockets can take two to three weeks in cool weather. Hard-edged bubbles that never change shape are contamination, not moisture, and should be reported.

What is the best way to clean tinted windows?

Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner or plain water with a drop of dish soap, applied with a microfibre cloth. Never use ammonia-based cleaners — most household blue glass cleaners are — because ammonia breaks down the film adhesive. Wipe the top edge horizontally so the edge is never lifted.

Why is there a small gap between the tint and the edge of the window?

It is deliberate. The film is cut fractionally short of the glass edge so it cannot catch on the door seal or lift when the window moves. It is a sign of a proper installation, not a defect.
