Why it is different from ordinary fog
Tule fog forms in the valley on still winter nights after rain, when the ground cools and the trapped moist air saturates. It is dense, ground-level, and it can drop visibility to under ten feet in patches with no warning between clear stretches.
It is the reason the valley has historically produced some of the worst multi-vehicle pileups in the state.
What it does to imperfect glass
Fog scatters light. Every headlight from an oncoming car becomes a diffuse glow rather than a point, and any flaw in your windshield scatters it a second time.
A chip you never notice in daylight becomes a starburst. Pitting becomes a wall. A repair sitting in the driver's line of sight — which is why we will not do one there — becomes a smear directly where you are trying to see.
What to do before fog season
Deal with chips before December. Check for pitting using the low-sun test. Replace wiper blades and top the washer fluid, because fog deposits a fine film that needs washing rather than wiping.
And use the defroster properly: fog wets the outside and condensation forms on the inside, so you need air on the glass, not just heat. Air conditioning on with the defroster dries the air and clears the inside faster than heat alone.
