Why it is generally fine
Most leases prohibit permanent alterations. Quality window film is removable: heat and steam soften the adhesive, the film lifts, and the residue clears chemically, leaving the glass as it was.
Practically speaking, lease returns rarely object to legal, professionally installed tint at all — and many lessees leave it on.
The condition: buy film that removes cleanly
This is where the choice matters more than usual. Cheap dyed film that has failed does not come off cleanly — it shreds, leaving a layer of dead adhesive that takes hours to clear, and the removal bill lands at lease end.
Carbon and ceramic films stay intact and come off in sheets. On a lease, the better film is genuinely the cheaper decision.
Two practical notes
Keep it legal. A fix-it ticket on a leased car is your ticket, and a lease return with illegal tint can be charged for removal.
And be careful about the rear window: film removal there is where the defroster grid gets damaged, and a damaged grid at lease return is a chargeable item. Have it removed by someone who does it with steam rather than a blade.
