Spontaneous shattering is a real phenomenon
Roof panels are tempered, and tempered glass can fail without an impact — a microscopic inclusion in the glass, combined with thermal stress, releases the stored tension. It sounds like a gunshot and it is genuinely alarming.
Large panoramic panels are more susceptible simply because there is more glass and more thermal load. A valley summer provides plenty of both. It is not usually anyone's fault.
The drains matter more than the glass
A sunroof is not sealed. Water gets past the panel by design, collects in a channel around the opening, and drains down four tubes hidden inside the pillars.
Those tubes block with pollen, leaf litter and dust. When they do, the channel overflows into the headliner, and the owner concludes the sunroof "leaks". It does not; it is draining into the car instead of out of it.
Clearing them periodically is the single most valuable sunroof maintenance there is, and it costs nothing.
If it has shattered
Do not drive far with an open roof — glass keeps dropping into the cabin, and rain will do serious interior damage. Cover it with heavy plastic and tape, taping to the roof rails and glass edge rather than to paint.
Then call. Panoramic panels are large and not always in stock, so it may be a next-day rather than same-day job, but covering it properly buys that time.
