Shade, but check what is above you
Shade halves the thermal cycling that spreads chips and takes the edge off the cabin heat that ages everything inside.
But not all shade is equal. Sacramento's older neighbourhoods are full of mature oaks, and oaks drop limbs — particularly after the first proper wind following a dry summer. A limb through a back glass is a genuine seasonal pattern here. Park under healthy canopy, not under a dead branch.
Watch for sprinkler overspray
Landscape sprinklers in this area run on hard water, and overspray onto glass leaves mineral deposits that etch if they bake on repeatedly.
That etching is not removable by washing, and heavy cases require polishing or replacement. If a parking spot gets hit by sprinklers every morning, it is a bad spot.
Nose-in versus nose-out
For rock chips: nothing, once you are parked. For break-ins: reversing in puts your trunk against a wall or a hedge, which makes it much harder to work in, and puts your windows facing the aisle where they are visible.
Visibility is what deters. Thieves prefer edges, corners, unlit ends and spaces beside large vans that block sightlines.
The retail-lot rule
Arden Fair and the surrounding retail lots are the busiest smash-and-grab ground in the county, and the pattern is consistent: it happens fast, in daylight, in the far corners.
Park where there is footfall, take everything visible out of the cabin including the charging cable — an empty cradle suggests a device in the glovebox — and do not leave the registration in the door pocket.
