Where mobile is straightforwardly better
- You do not drive a damaged car. Driving a car with a shattered windshield or an open window to a shop is the single most dangerous part of the whole process, and mobile removes it entirely.
- You do not lose half a day. No drive over, no waiting room, no arranging a ride, no second trip back.
- The car is not left unattended — which matters enormously after a break-in.
- It costs the same or less. A van has lower overheads than a building with a lobby. Anyone charging a call-out fee is charging you for their convenience.
Where a shop is genuinely better
- Rain, with no covered parking. Urethane will not bond to a wet pinch weld. If there is no garage or carport, the choice is a shop or a different day — and we will tell you that rather than do the job badly.
- Severe rust at the pinch weld. If the metal the windshield bonds to has corroded, it needs treatment before any glass goes on. That is body-shop work.
- No level space at all. A steep driveway or a tight street spot with no room to open the doors is not a workable setup.
- Some ADAS recalibrations. Static camera calibration needs a level floor and targets at measured distances — a shop environment. Dynamic calibration is a road drive and can follow a mobile fit.
The myth about quality
The idea that mobile work is inherently lower quality is a hangover from an era of less capable adhesives. Today the same urethane, the same primers and the same glass go on a van as into a bay. What actually determines quality is preparation and cure time, and both are entirely within a mobile technician’s control.
What genuinely differs is weather and surface. That is why the honest conditions above matter — a good mobile shop turns down the jobs it should not do outdoors, and a bad one does them anyway.
