Why dyed film fails
Dyed film blocks light by absorbing it with an organic dye layer. Ultraviolet light breaks those dye molecules down. The colour shifts toward purple as different pigments fail at different rates, and the adhesive degrades alongside it, producing bubbles and delamination.
In a Central Valley climate — long summers, intense UV, cars parked in the open — that failure arrives in two to three years. The purple bubbled window is not bad luck, it is the material doing what it does.
Why carbon and ceramic do not
Carbon film uses carbon particles rather than dye. Nano-ceramic uses ceramic particles. Neither is an organic pigment, so neither has anything for UV to break down. They hold their colour indefinitely.
What eventually ends their life is mechanical: an edge lifted by a door seal, a scratch from a bad cleaning, damage during a break-in. That is usually a decade or more, and often longer than the owner keeps the car.
What you can do to shorten its life
Ammonia. Most household blue glass cleaners are ammonia-based, and ammonia attacks film adhesive from the inside surface. This is the single most common cause of premature failure on good film.
Then: rolling windows down during the first three days of curing; paper towels instead of microfibre; scraping ice or grime off the inside of the rear window; and wiping the top edge vertically so the seal catches it.
