Subaru WRX back glass and side windows: what a break actually involves

Side and rear glass break for two reasons: a break-in, or a rock. Either way the glass is now inside your Subaru WRX, and getting it out is most of the work.

Tempered glass, and where it goes

The rear window on a Subaru WRX is tempered, not laminated. That is a genuine engineering difference, not a detail: tempered glass does not crack and spread the way a windshield does. It holds until it does not, and then it goes all at once into several thousand blunt cubes.

Most of those cubes end up somewhere other than where you can see them — the trunk well, the seat rails, the parcel shelf, the door channels, the seat-belt reel housings. Replacing the glass is half the job. Getting the old glass out of a WRX is the other half, and it is the half a cheap quote skips.

The defroster grid and, on many Subaru models, the radio antenna are printed into the rear glass itself. The replacement is matched so both work as they did, and the defroster is reconnected and tested before the technician leaves.

If it was a break-in

Photograph everything before you touch it — wide shot, close shot of the window, the interior with the glass where it fell. Once you have swept the seat, the evidence for both the police report and the insurance claim is gone and cannot be recreated.

File the report even if nothing was taken; most insurers want a report number. Then take out the registration and insurance documents, because they carry your home address, and the garage remote, because a remote plus an address is effectively a house key.

Do not drive the WRX across town with the window out. That is what mobile service exists for — we come to where the car is parked, which for a car that cannot be locked is the entire point. Same-day is normal on these, and we answer around the clock.

What a proper replacement includes

The door card comes off. The door cavity, the regulator and the run channels are vacuumed out before the new glass goes in — glass left in the channel is the usual reason a replacement window grinds or judders on the way up a month later.

If the regulator or the motor was damaged in the break-in, you are told before the work starts rather than after. On a rear window, the defroster is reconnected and tested before the technician leaves.

And the cabin gets cleaned: trunk, seat rails, parcel shelf, seat-belt reels, door channels. It is not a courtesy, it is the job.

Questions on this topic

How fast can a broken Subaru WRX window be replaced?

Usually the same day. Safety Prime Auto Glass & Tint treats break-ins as urgent because a vehicle with an open window cannot be left secure, and offers 24/7 emergency response with the technician travelling to wherever the WRX is parked.

Will the replacement WRX rear window still have working defroster lines?

Yes. The replacement is matched to the vehicle so the heated defroster grid — and any radio antenna printed into the glass — are the ones the Subaru WRX was built with, and the defroster is reconnected and tested before the technician leaves.

Do you clean the broken glass out of the WRX?

Yes, and it is part of the job rather than an extra. Tempered glass shatters into thousands of pieces that end up in the trunk, the seat rails, the parcel shelf, the seat-belt reels and the door channels. All of it is vacuumed out, because glass left in a window channel scratches the new window later.

Can I drive a WRX with a broken side or rear window?

Only as far as you must. The vehicle cannot be secured, loose glass keeps working out of the door cavity into the seats, rain soaks the interior, and an open rear window draws exhaust into the cabin. Mobile replacement means the WRX does not have to be driven anywhere at all.
