What privacy glass actually is
The glass itself is dyed during manufacture — the colour is in the material, not applied to it. It typically sits around 25 to 30% VLT, which looks properly dark.
What it does: obscures the interior from outside. That is genuinely useful for what is in the back.
What it does not do: reject much heat. It absorbs some light, but it has essentially no infrared rejection, so the heat still arrives. This is why the third row of an SUV with dark factory glass is still unbearable in August.
Filming over it
You can, and in this climate it is usually worth it. A ceramic film over privacy glass adds the infrared rejection the glass never had, without needing to make the window much darker.
A light ceramic film over factory privacy glass often changes the appearance very little while changing the temperature substantially — which is the right way round.
One legal note
Because rear side windows and the rear windshield have no darkness limit in California, adding film over privacy glass back there is unrestricted.
The front doors are the constraint, and factory privacy glass never extends to the front doors on a US-market vehicle — so the front is a separate decision with the 70% rule applying.
