What it actually is
A standard laminated windshield has one plastic interlayer. An acoustic windshield has a three-layer interlayer with a softer, energy-absorbing core, which damps the vibration frequencies that carry wind and tyre noise into the cabin.
The reduction is on the order of a few decibels in the range human hearing is most sensitive to, which sounds small and is very obvious in practice.
How to tell if you have one
Look at the manufacturer's stamp in a bottom corner of the glass. Acoustic panes are usually marked "Acoustic", "Sound Screen", "SoundScreen" or with a small ear icon.
It is common from mid-trim upward on most makes and standard on nearly all luxury vehicles.
Why the wrong pane is a real problem
Nothing fails. Nothing leaks. The car is simply louder, and the owner spends two weeks wondering whether they are imagining it before realising the highway drone is new.
It is one of the most common ways a cheap quote turns out not to have been cheap, because the fix is a second windshield.
